05/17/2022 Interns

Jena, City of Bakersfield

The City of Bakersfield received some funding for an intern program.  I am looking to all my colleagues to inquire if you have an special handbook or policy with regard to interns.  I am looking for guidance to share with department heads/managers.  Any assistance is much appreciated!

Hi Jena. We don't have any such intern program (of which I'm aware). Would primarily start with whatever volunteer handbook you have in place.  I did learn something new every day - and today it is that there's a "Big City Mayors coalition."

Response from Anthony in our City Manager's Office:

The City’s fellowship and internship is funded through the Governor’s Youth Jobs Program https://www.californiavolunteers.ca.gov/youth-jobs-corps/

The Governor used a portion of the state’s ARPA allocation to provide direct grants to California’s 13 largest cities. The Big City Mayors Coalition had been advocating for a youth jobs program for some time and the Governor used ARPA as an opportunity to launch the program.

In January, the Governor’s proposed budget included permanent ongoing state funding for the Youth Jobs Corps. The proposed budget includes a set aside for small and medium sized cities using a competitive grant process.

Long story short, if the Youth Jobs Corps remains in the budget, the grant application would be available to cities in the fall.

Please have your friend give me a call if they have any questions.

Sincerely,

Anthony

Would you be willing to share how you were able to obtain the funding for an intern program?
